Some weird ice cream thingy

You Are Vanilla Ice Cream

Your personality is anything but "vanilla"
You're a risk taker, who's up for anything new.
You go well with anyone and fit into any situation.

You are most compatible with rocky road ice cream.
What Flavor Ice Cream Are You?

JC or Poly - which path to take?

A guide for Sec 4s...

Students of today have to make educated and wise choices regarding their course of education. One of the most important decisions that they have to make is regarding the selection of a Junior College (JC) or polytechnic after the controversial “O” levels. Principals, teachers, parents and relatives will dish out their wonderful harangues while the students struggle hard to grasp the new information that has been disseminated to them. This important information will, in time to come, assist the student in their decision-making process. Most of the students tend to sit on the fence when it comes to procuring the courage required to make a decision that reduces all opportunity cost and obtain ceteris paribus. There is, of course, a proclivity to make a quick and frivolous choice due to the large amount of stress; this is definitely a faux pas made by a jejune-minded person. Trying hard not to capitulate to stress is difficult, but life is already laden with such obstacles.

The main question students will ask themselves is: Should I choose a JC or a polytechnic? Students who like a structured and guided curriculum, with a school-like environment would usually prefer the JC path while those who are inclined towards a learning approach that is more hands-on, with more project work would choose the polytechnic route. So how do students figure out what is their learning style? Polytechnic counsellors will usually ask prospective students about their hobbies and interests to help them make a decision.

Prestige – the main factor that causes preponderance amongst all students. Brand names such as Raffles and Hua Chong tend to draw huge droves of valedictorians from all over the country every year. Thus we notice that a war is waged within the top schools as the valedictorians battle it out to become the cream of the crop. We must also consider the fact that with more prestige, the price of stress and finance increases. School fees are sky high due to the better facilities which require maintenance. Unfortunately, parents and relatives of these students are usually (with much veracity), dogmatic. Polytechnic students are inevitably looked down upon, and students from Institutes of Technical Education (ITE) suffer from even greater sarcasm. The way people think here is: “Polys are for those who can’t make it to JC…” Does this really matter, or perhaps the main raison de’tre of the path chosen is to achieve the dreams of these students?

The next factor that contributes to the decision-making process is the fact that it is difficult for a polytechnic student to make it to the local universities. Currently, only about 10% of a poly cohort makes it to university here, compared to 73% of a JC cohort. However, due to the increasing calibre of the poly students, the trend is changing. More poly students will have a place in the local universities in years to come. In fact, more than 60% of polytechnic graduates go on to complete a degree within 5 years of receiving their diplomas. The view that many of the parents have today is indeed parochial.

There are, of course, other routes that can be taken in lieu of the normal JC and poly path. Centralised institutes and IB programmes are now available to students, allowing them to learn at their own pace. Centralised Institutes give students 3 years to learn and eventually take the A level examination, the passport to university. IB programmes are mainly offered in top schools so that the students can simply skip their A levels and move on to universities straight away. The IB programme however, has its cons. If the student were to fail the course, it may be the end of the route for them. Will this mean more freedom for the IB students or spell the word “STRESS” on their heads?

To sum it all up, students taking the O level examinations will suffer from a paroxysm when it comes to making a wise decision about their next path of life. The hiatus between the future and present will be made smaller as this important step is taken. :)

Ups & Downs

Life is such a rollercoaster ride... Right now I'm on a ride downhill... Not exactly a steep drop as I have dropped down the slope in a gentle manner, bracing myself as I proceed downhill... That explains why I'm not desperately depressed, maintaining this neutral mood... Things will look better. There's always a rainbow after the rain. A silver lining in each ominous cloud. This probably sounds weird to many of you.... lol. But nvm. I'm merely disturbed. Not depressed. :)

Recent Events

It's been a busy week... Not surprising... :)
NDP core grp has reached the plateau of their improvement... Despite the effort put in and lighting effects, two factors contribute to the failure of the performance WOWness. Firstly, some of the students are very immature in their train of thoughts. Pulling the white cloth to the ground, wrestling on the field, tickling each other, going out of formation and being slow in movements. Yes I understand how some of them feel that this is such a waste of time. But come to think of it, there's only 2 more main practices. Then that's it. You can dream on if you want to participate again in the national stadium for ndp. Well, I dunno lar. Not all of them are like dat. Its only a small handful that ruin the thing.
Flag bearers are okay. They're willing to correct themselves. Jia you people!

Okay. Working on the following tasks now:
1) Flash Assignment
2) Locvideo Editing
3) YF camp stuff
4) Marketing (Green Tea)
5) Mustard Seed Publication

I had better remember to study for my next marketing test! And not forgetting medisoc test... :)

10 items that are highly important to me:

1) Cameras - Nikon D70s and Sony Cybershot P43
I got my little Sony cybershot last year at around March... Got obsessed with taking candids as the shutter speed was excellent... It was with me everyday at school, where I took loads of photos... The Nikon, I got it this year after joining SPH TXY... Bought it at quite a cost... Yepp. Very important to me...

Price: $???? and $199 respectively

2) Apple Laptop Ibook
Got it this year as it is compulsory for mass communications students... 40GB memory nia... Not enuf... and seems to lag at times... I dun recommend ibook...If u wanna buy, get macbook lar... :)

Price: $????

3) Billabong Wallet
Got it this year as a birthday present... Thanks Daphine!

4) Giordano Blue Handband
Brings back the old memories...

Price: $3 I think.

5) A purple pouch of 100 stars
Brings back the old memories...

Price: N.A.

6) Siemens Handphone
This ancient thingy has been with me for very long... It was my first phone... Gosh... But the keypad sucks... I want a new phone... Nokia slidephone/Samsung Slidephone...

Stuff @ a glance

Yar I've been very busy... Luckily my marketing quiz is over... Camera Handling test also over... I scored 4. sumthing upon 5... Not totally satisfied... I actually forgot where the manual iris button is on the videocam (Sony $5000 videocam)... Anw, let's blog shall we?

Yesterday:

Yea the usual NDP practice... I din really get involved... Studied for marketing like sum freak... Yar they watched a video of the performance... Okay lar tt proves tt I dun need to take a video of the performance lar... Obviously my videotaking skills are peanuts compared to the mediacorp one... haha. I will be renting out a SB600 plus stofen bounce for $15 on NDP preview day and NDP itself. Tho I probably cant take any photos during the performance itself, I guess there will be chances to take grp shots in indoor stadium and when the performance is over. The flash would be useful. Yes submitted my photo montage video to Mr Foo... Hope that it would be cleared for screening to the performers. To motivate. :) I love my juniors!

After NDp prac I waited for the Summer Camp stuff to start... Met up with 2 TXY members of NH... Yar education minister came... Began my snapping spree, much to the surprise of many teachers... I think they dunno why I snap the pics for la... Hopefully the article gets published den they will understand... Otherwise may think tt I m very boliao keep coming back for nothing... LOL... which is true lar. I'm the only non exco to keep coming back I think. LOL. Gosh.

The rule of photography. ONE SHOT ONE KILL. Means the photog will do anything at all costs (wo breaking the law of cos) to get the pic he/she wants. So tt means shoving, pushing, kicking, are in this game. Well I dun play rough of cos. Some photographers do.

Anw, got ZB photographer arrive at the scene... This guy was the guy who took the award winning photo of LKY crying at the recent death of a nation hero.

Yupp. Went home at abt 9pm. Sheesh. So late. Tired.

TOdaY:

Lessons as usual... Took marketing quiz.. quite okay I hope. lol. Then went to JE library where I met PHAY, Jie Ming, Colin. SK and Evelyn joined us later and we had loads of fun gossiping and looking at videos, listening to music and of cos, dancing in the library.... GOsh Everyone was like looking at PHY dance while seated. lol! GOsh. SO funny. Yepp.

That's abt it for now! :)

A state of depression

I apologise. Seriously. I apologise. I have been too caught up in too many things. Everything that I have been doing has been slipshot and sucky. Too many agendas, too many activities. I try to do my best in each thing, but its not enuf. Its no use trying harder. I have to strike off the unnecessary items on my agenda. Its all my fault. I undertook too many responsibilities. Too many extra jobs. Too much extra help rendered.

A list of things that I have been doing:
1) NDP helping (every Sat and wednesday afternoon)
2) Green Tea project
3) Locvideo Project
4) Web Graphics Project
5) Graphic Comm project
6) Additional Help rendering to my juniors
7)YF camp committee

I will SCRAP OFF no. 7 and 6 ASAP. NDP cant be scapped off.. I have already commited myself as a passholder....

I sincerely apologise to all my marketing group members... I started off the project as someone who went really enthu abt everything, den now, I'm like. stagnant. I'm sorry. I really let all of you down. I need some time to sort things out. Willl spend some time alone. I really really dun deserve to be one of da leaders. I let all of you down. I suck. I'm sorry.
I promise to be there on Sat. Seeya people there. I... I... i dunno how to put it across... I m so... argh. Somebody should just come over n kill me.

Gosh I'm in a really depressed state of mind now. Sorry to everyone....

Digging up the past

You know I seem to have forgotten which month and year I posted the reason for joining NHDS in Secondary School... Its such an old topic liao lor... If you are lucky u can try my archives... There should be a very long entry on how it came to be this wae.
I had no CCA background from primary school, being a study nerd... So Ms Yeo told me that I only had 2 choices: Chinese Orchestra or Dance. I was devastated cos I din want any of the above. First Choice was ELDDS aka some debating club. 2nd Choice was ITMC. Or manybe it was the other wae round, wif ITMC as first choice. Anw, I din get any chance to join those, (luckily i din join ELDDS, cos I realise that I'm not such a good speaker) Then began the relatively interesting persuasion carried out by a few of my classmates, Harry and Goodwin (Who obviously joined dance too) and Ms Yeo who did most of the persuasion. And so I said, okay. Dance. And I did not regret it. Dance changed my life. Seriously. On how NHDS changed my life, check out my achives. :) I have been blogging since 2004.

Nostalgia

The more I listen to the NDP performance music, the more hyped up I get. Even though I'm not in the performance... Shows how attached I'e gotten to the dance... Anw, quite alotof videos haf appeared on youtube... As usual, the videos are those zoom in zoom out type...
Some advice when videoing mass displays:
1) DO NOT ZOOM IN (Unless there's a centrestage, then you can zoom in slowly on the centre icon, but SLOWLY. And with a tripod please.)
2) DO not sway your camera withe the music ( USE TRIPOD )
3) Try to set up equipment beforehand.

More stuff here:

Anyway, my next target is to video the tap performance. But its quite tough to do a frontal video... Shall do an analysis on how to video their performance. Anyway, watching the performance realy makes me feel nostalgic. They have gone a long way. Its like seeing my children grow up... lol... NDP rawks. I seriously will miss the thingy when its over. Will miss the AIs, and lower sec too coos I will only come back regularly to see NHDS... :) And despite the multi tasking I'm carrying out, I hope to be able to handle the stuff well.

List of stuff to do:
1) Burn CD of identification photos and numbers foy Yan Long
2) Burn CD of photos for Da Jie
3) Burn CD of selected photos for development
4) Edit photos of NDP family day
5) Edit video of NDP family day shots
6) Edit video of NDP
7) Take photos of green tea adverts
8) Edit video of interview project
9) Create mounted-photo board for NHDS
10) CATS powerpoint presentation
11) Study marketing
12) Study Medisoc
13) Prepare Locvideo Types of shots

Only when I list em all do i realise how many things I haf to do... But I shall stay cheerful! :) Happy-go-lucky!

P.S: I do recall sum1 asking me in one of the tags on why I joined NHDS in secondary school... The answer lies in my archives... :) Main blog archives, to be more specific.
